City music lovers had a date with a delightful musical evening on Friday where tabla<\/em> maestro Surjeet Singh and\u00a0kathak<\/em> exponent Rohit Pawar\u00a0performed at a monthly baithak<\/em> series programme organized by the Pracheen Kala Kendra at the M.L. Koser Indoor Auditorium\u00a0in Sector 35, Chandigarh.<\/p>\n

Tabla Exponent Surjeet Singh<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Surjeet Singh mesmerised music lovers drawn from distant corners of the Tricity to be part of this mega musical evening. Surjeet, a graded artist of the All-India Radio, started learning the subtle nuances of tabla<\/em> playing \u00a0under the tutelage of Guru Kulwinder Singh when he was all of four.<\/p>\n

\"Performance<\/div>\n

Surjeet commenced his recital with the traditional Uthan<\/em>, which was followed by Peshkar<\/em>\u00a0based on\u00a0 teen tal<\/em>\u00a0 of\u00a0the Punjab Gharana. He moved on to present\u00a0with finesse Kayda, Rela and Palta,<\/em> et al. The technical part of the recital consisted of gats, \u2018Chakradar\u2019<\/em> that left the audience spellbound amidst thunderous applause. He concluded the recital with a crisp and captivating bandish<\/em>\u00a0of the gharana<\/em>. He was accompanied by Ishwar Singh\u00a0 on harmonium.<\/p>\n

Kathak Prodigy Rohit<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The other star performer of the evening was Rohit Pawar, a kathak<\/em> exponent, who has evolved into a fast rhythmic kathak<\/em> dancer from amongst his peers across the country. He honed the subtle nuances of this classical form of dance under the astute stewardship of Guru Vaswati Misra and sibling Rahul Pawar.<\/p>\n

Rohit, who has been performing live on stage since the tender age, has given solo performances at various dance concerts in the country and overseas, earning laurels for his stellar performances.<\/p>\n

He started with\u00a0the Shiv Stuti<\/em> (Invocation of lord Shiva), followed by a powerful kathak<\/em> presentation in teen taal <\/em>with vilambit, Madhya <\/em>and drut layas<\/em>\u00a0that added to the engaging performance. He also presented the traditional \u2018tode tukde gat paranas\u2019<\/em>, uthaan, ladi ,<\/em>etc.<\/p>\n

He concluded with the typical Rajasthani mand \u2018kesriya balam padharo humare des\u2019<\/em>, bringing the robust rustic flavour of the land of sand. This was followed by a powerful jugalbandi<\/em> of sawal jawab<\/em>\u00a0on tabla<\/em>. His fine and flawless footwork, in sync with bhav, abhinay, and taal<\/em>, drew him admiration from the audience.<\/p>\n

The team of accompanists included \u00a0Zaheen Khan on tabla<\/em>, Mahavir Gangani on pakhawaj<\/em>, Ghulam Waris\u00a0 on sarangi <\/em>and Sohaib Hasan\u00a0on vocals.<\/p>\n
