SAARI RAAT - A THEATRE PLAY IN HINDI BY BADAL SIRCAR

Saari Raat is story of a night and three characters a husband a wife and an old man. The play starts when the couple takes shelter in a broken down house on a rainy night. The owner of house is a mysterious insomniac old man who lives there alone in his world of dreams. As the night progresses we get an insight into couple's married life their seemingly happy relationship lacks mutual understanding. The husband is a practical man who considers his wife's philosophical and poetic outlook foolish and futile.

Saari Raat is about the decision of moving from one realm of reality to another. And it is presented using the two realms we know best - the realm of reality (real/practical/perceived world) and the realm of our dreams. The beauty of the play lies in its portrayal of these co-existing realms. Despite beautifully describing these realms the playwright never tries to put one realm at a higher plane than the other and this is what binds the play together. It's difficult to gauge whether the play is a narration of an incident or a dream in itself. The wife is a character with whom every common man can relate to.

In this world people from multiple realms co-exist together but there are many people who are stuck between two realms. Almost everyone is stuck between two things whatever it might be and the biggest problem is we do not realize we are stuck.

Saari Raat doesn't give answers it makes u realize that you have many options that you are not living life to the maximum that you are not moving ahead that you are STUCK. The play inspires you to shed the immobility realize the innumerable opportunities the life offers and decide!
