Aayush Khatkar from the CYSS, Chhatra YuvaSangharsh Samiti), the student wing of Aam Admi Party has won the election for the post of president of Panjab University Campus Students’ Council.

Khatkar got 2,712 votes, while his nearest rival Harish Gujjar of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) managed to get 2,052 votes.
Students gathered in huge numbers at Stu-C in groups discussing, chatting and waiting for the results. It was a scintillating experience for the new students of the first year and for the second and third year students as they missed the razmatazz of the elections due to the  2 Covid years.

Panjab Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Hyer reached Panjab University campus to join party’s student wing in their celebrations.

Interestingly, this was CYSS maiden elections in Panjab University and gave a big blow to the traditional parties ABVP, NSUi, SOPU, SOI by winnig the top election in the first go.

As the early leads starting coming in with Ayush manitaining the lead of about 500 votes, the students had little iota of doubt if NSUI or ABVP would be able to cover it up.

Belonging to Jind in Haryana, Aayush is a LLM student in University Institute of legal studies and has been active in PU politics since 2017. His father is a farmer and his mother, a home maker. According to him, his USP  is being present in the hostel 24×7 to address the students’ issues.

Calling his party the one with a progressive ideology, his main focus is working on the lack of proper infrastructure in Panjab University, like hostels, lab equipment, cleanliness, etc.

He feels the participation in elections was less this time because of the two-yr covid gap, “The first , second and third year students were all new voters and voting for the first time, so they were not much aware of about their leaders,” he said.

In the 2019 polls, Chetan Chaudhary of the Student Organisation of India (SOI) was elected campus president, while Kanupriya of Students For Society (SFS) became the first woman president in 2018.
