Cartoonist & Comedian… Are you ready for Ravi Gupta?
What do stand up comedy and cartoons have in common… um, Ravi Gupta! Okay, sorry about that, it was a bad one. But we promise you this guy is nothing like us. He doesn’t crack bad jokes and really does make cartoons for a living. What a life, eh?
What : Xtreme Comedy Night with Ravi Gupta
When : Apr 15, 2018 | 7:30PM – 10:30PM
Where: Xtreme Sports Bar & Grill, Sector 22B
By now there’s not one citizen in this country that is untouched by the rising storm of stand up comedy across the nation. We all know what it is, how it works, why we love it. We actively hanker after stand up for our own reasons of distraction. Cartoons, on the other hand, are like the witty & wiser older brother of stand up comedy. He’s been around for at least a century and was playing the joker for his audience for as long as stand up hadn’t arrived.
And yet, cartoons and jokes remain related. A cartoon is like a joke drawn on paper. Both carry an element of wit and let on as little as possible to create an effect. Though cartoons appear funny, often they are dealing with something serious and put a funny spin on it. Comedy comes more easily from stupidity than solemnity, and that’s why silly jokes on something serious create an effect of laughter. What makes the relationship of comedy and cartoons interesting is that with the help of a few words and images, a whole picture comes together and leaves behind a third, bigger image in the reader’s mind.
Now, what happens when you mix stand up and cartoons? Well, we’ll just have to wait and find out this weekend at Ravi’s show. Originally from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, this young cartoonist is now based in Delhi and makes humour for a living – in more ways than one. He claims to have very few talents (ya right! Like these two aren’t enough, haan?) and humour remains the most prominent of the lot. He also claims to laugh a lot at himself. But then which comic act doesn’t take a dig or two at their own self? They need to be able to laugh at their own shortcomings too.
Of late, Mr. Gupta has been performing solo and non-solo events (with established comedians nonetheless) at colleges, corporates, open mic events, industry associations, etc. Ravi’s comedy is generally based on the daily life of the average citizen, bringing out mundane aspects of everyday life with an edgy and witty take on it. Known as the ‘shuddh desi comic’ within the comedy circuit, Ravi depends on the tagline ‘bhokal tight hai” to express his general state of existence.
Catch him live this Sunday at Xtreme Sports Bar & Grill. Book your tickets here now.
A One Stop Solution to Beat the Heat This Summer
The heat is on! And it’s only going to get hotter as the summer advances into May, June, July… all the way till the monsoon showers coming pouring down. With global warming on the rise, the earth is getting warmer by the day and so will the summers. Here’s our pick for the one stop destination to beat the heat.
What : CII Coolex 2018
When : Apr 13-16, 2018 | 11AM -9PM
Where: Himachal Bhawan, Sector 28
Chandigarh is (thankfully) one of the cooler cities in the country during the peak summer months. And yet, even the Chandigarhian summer gets unbearable as the heat rises. Over the past years, the tricity has experienced temperatures as high as 43 degrees! With high temperatures come heavy side effects – dehydration, dizziness, headaches, and cramps. Not to mention the constant sweating and exhaustion to accompany your day to day activities, starting from early in the morning to late in the evening.
It is but natural for us to seek the cool shade of trees and buildings. But it would be so simple if it was as easy as standing under the shade. Nope. Artificial cooling has become imperative to beat the heat – whether it is the fan or the cooler or the air conditioner. Even the food goes bad quicker than you would assume. Heat waves and sultry weather take their toll on all living organisms. While animals and plants don’t have a choice but to bear with it, we humans and our intelligent brains did wonders by coming up with artificial cooling systems.
Now, if you don’t already have the aforementioned cooling systems in your homes and offices, we have a solution for you. Alternatively, if you already have cooling systems but they are in a dilapidated condition, it’s time to throw them out and buy new ones. And we know just the place you should go. The CII Coolex Cooling Bazaar, of course! So forget all about stepping out in the sun to recky the market for the best deals. This is a one stop solution to all your summer problems.
This 21st edition of the Coolex Cooling Bazaar is an exclusive exhibition of a wide range of cooling appliances. What will you find here? Everything from air conditioners to refrigerators to deep freezers to air coolers to water coolers to cold rooms and much much more. The best deals on the biggest brands all in one place. Compare and contrast different systems and their ‘cool’ features. You’ll find the best of the best in terms of energy efficiency, environment friendly, and smart systems. Act now or simmer through the summer!
Here’s Why You Need To Step Out This Baisakhi
Baisakhi is right around the corner and it’s high time we started gearing up for the merrymaking that this festival of harvest brings with it. There’s much much more to Baisakhi than just bhangra and gujias. And this weekend you’ll find out exactly what the big deal about this festival is.
| What : Baisakhi Bazaar 2018 When : Apr 13 – 14, 2018 | 11AM – 9PM Where: Chandigarh Club, Sector 1 |
What : Global Fashion Bazaar When : Apr 13-15, 2018 | 11AM – 9PM Where: Kisan Bhawan, Sector 35A |
The term ‘Baisakhi’ comes from the word ‘Vaisakh’, which is the Indian name for the first month of the year, according to the solar calendar. Thus, Baisakhi traditionally marks the Solar New Year. It is also considered to be a marker for the Sikh New Year or the Khalsa Sirjana Divas, i.e. when the Khalsa panth of warriors came into being under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Most importantly, however, Baisakhi is the celebration of the harvest season across the agricultural north of India.
A festival of vibrant colours and energetic fervour, Baisakhi is a truly Punjabi festival replete with punjabi dance forms, authentic punjabi food, loud punjabi music, indigenous games, and community fairs. It’s more than just another holiday on your work calendar. In fact, you’ll find decorated Gurudwaras as well as local kirtans taking place all over the tricity. Moreover, it’s a site for a true representation of the rich heritage and culture of Punjab.
Baisakhi is a time of meeting loved ones and friends and socialising over mouth-watering festive food. Much like Diwali, or Holi, for that matter. Modern day Baisakhi, on the other hand, is more than just dance and food. It’s also about fashion and style statements. And that’s where the above listed two fairs come into the picture. The whole point of festivals is to dress up and make merry. And that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Baisakhi Bazaar and the Global Fashion Bazaar this weekend.
A true blend of contemporary and traditional will be the flavour this weekend. Find your own unique look amongst the latest trends on display. So whether it’s the neon hued phulkari jackets or the eclectic ghagras with sombre cholis. Or maybe you’ll want to opt for the chirpy motifs on long skirts and short kurtis. Dhoti pants and bandhgalas in bold prints too. Funky accessories and dramatic footwear aren’t far behind. But, hey, you’ll only know if you go. No?

Seminar on EdTech – The Need of The Hour Today
There’s no denying how advances in technology and internet have changed our perception of the world and how we interact with it. Today’s experience of the learning mind is far more comprehensive than, say, even 15 years back. However, as responsible adults, we need to channelize how technology and internet are used for the education of today’s generation of growing children and that’s exactly what this seminar is out to do.
What : EdTech : Novel Ways of Teaching and Learning
When : Apr 14, 2018 | 4PM – 6PM
Where: Workcave, Sector 37-C
If the learning experience of millennials is charted against that of the premillennial generations, there’ll be a stark contrast in the ways of learning and imbibing knowledge between the two and thus a stark difference in the brain activity of the two. With technological advances taking place all around them, the young adults of the last 20 years have had a different kind of exposure to the world in a way that their parent generations have not.
Old is gold, they say. And perhaps that is why schools and institutions across the country are still turning to books as the best source of knowledge and learning. But with change in lifestyles and how information is consumed today, it is but obvious that the next step is to incorporate technology into learning habits and patterns for today’s generation of growing children. The integration of the two does not simply point to modernity in education, but also expands the scope of what is being learnt and how it is being learnt.
Thus, Workcave is hosting a seminar on the integration of technology with education for teachers, parents, and guardians alike. The seminar hopes to cover certain key topics in technology-based learning such as the importance of it and the role that it plays in education. Moreover, ideas will be bounced regarding how technology can be transformed from a mode of distraction to a mode of effective learning for children.
Each kid has their own learning graph and this seminar aims to find a solution to how individual learning curves can be incorporated into personalized learning methods for every child. Technical advances are only going to become more elaborate over the coming years and that’s another aspect that the seminar wishes to cover, i.e. how to adopt the future of technology and improvise upon traditional learning methods.
The session will be conducted by TabSchool Inc., a Chandigarh based EdTech startup that focuses on students’ progress through easy and successful learning with the help of their cloud-based education software. Their vision is to make education accessible to everyone.
To attend the seminar, prior registration is required. Click on the link below to register.

Vegan Food Carnival 2018
Although the vegan movement has started enjoying mainstream status in western countries, it is yet to make a significant mark in India. Nevertheless, veganism has slowly crept into and found a place in Indian dietary and lifestyle choices. Here’s a food carnival that’s all about exploring the lesser known side of veganism.
What : Vegan Food Carnival 2018
When : Apr 14 – Apr 15, 2018 | 10AM – 10PM
Where: University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University
Okay, so first things first. What is veganism? The term ‘vegan’ was first coined in 1944. It is essentially a dietary and lifestyle choice that steers clear of all products that exploit animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. In India, however, most vegans maintain focus on dietary preferences only, often cutting out on non-vegetarian foods and dairy products, and sticking to plant-based food products only. Cruelty towards animals may not always be the only reason for a person to choose a vegan diet, but it most certainly remains the key factor for most.
What are the benefits of going vegan? For starters, if a healthy plant-based diet is maintained with the right mix of protein and essential vitamins and minerals, one can lead a healthier lifestyle with younger looking skin and increased energy levels. Plant-based diets tend to have high levels of fibre and antioxidants and low levels of saturated fat. This basic difference between ingredients keeps obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other such diseases at bay.
Environmentally too, the benefits of going vegan are quite obvious! With reduced consumption of animal-based products, a vegan ensures longer life spans and protection of the environment. Production of meat and other animal products requires a great deal of investment in terms of food and water consumption for animals, transportation cost, etc. These factors have contributed to the overall deforestation of the Earth and consequential extinction of species. Plant-based diets, on the other hand, are more sustainable and require only one-third of the land and water used in maintaining a meat and dairy diet.
So, what do vegans really eat? Well, everything that a regular person eats, but with switched ingredients! In order to compensate for certain nutrients and minerals, vegans tend to turn to a new variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, pulses, and seeds that may not be part of an average person’s diet. There is no dearth of dishes to prepare for the vegan diet using alternate ingredients. From ice creams and desserts to pizzas and pastas to curries and baked dishes, you name it, vegans eat it! And that’s exactly what you’ll find at this two day carnival at UIET.
The Vegan Food Carnival 2018 promises a range of tasty and healthy vegan food that will leave you craving for more. Food, games, music, and dance will all come together to make this a memorable experience. And who knows, perhaps you may choose the alternative lifestyle too after attending this carnival!
Chandigarh’s First Ever Dessert Festival
Remember when you were a kid and used to dream of candyland? Yep, that beautiful dreamy paradise made of only chocolates and sweets and sugar and pudding. Well, it’s happening! For real. House of Desserts is organising the tricity’s very own first ever dessert festival this weekend for all you sweet-toothed dessert dreamers out there.
What : Dessert Festival Chandigarh
When : Apr 14 – Apr 15, 2018 | 12PM – 11PM
Where: Elante Mall, Chandigarh
Okay, so let’s say candyland is not something you can relate to. We’ll give you another picture instead. Think, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. A huge building with innumerable rooms, all full of different kinds of experiments being done on chocolate and the flavours that go with it. You’ve probably got a better picture now. Well, that – and more – is exactly what Elante Mall will look like this weekend.
Over a thousand kind of desserts – Indian and otherwise – all at one place, for two whole days! Think ice creams, cupcakes, pastries, waffles, puddings, pies, cheesecakes, souffles, doughnuts, muffins, sundaes, brownies, mousse, and much much more. Don’t worry, Indian sweets are part of the party too! Everything from gulab jamun to jalebi to rasmalai to kulfi to variations of the barfi, halwa, laddus, and so much more than can be listed. Like we said, it’s a sweet toother’s paradise.
So what are the kind of stalls you can expect? Well, for starters, there’ll be some of the most respected sweet shops and confectioneries from in and around the tricity – handpicked by the organisers. Expect the likes of Daddy Waffle with their chocolate fries, oreo pops, red velvet waffles, and more. Our beloved Crown Patisserie from Sector 17 will be there too. The Jalebi Shop is bringing its infamous XXXL sized, ghee infested, sugar loaded Gohana Jalebi all the way from Gurgaon! Cake designer studio, Caked India, will be there with their funky collection of multidimensional cakes.
Furthermore, House of Desserts plans on showcasing the best in international dessert trends around the globe. Who knew a dessert festival could turn educational? Warning: you may come across some bizzare ideas for desserts like Ambala’s deep fried ice cream pakoda by Best Burps. Or the Spanish Churros in a whole new avatar! But for those who are sceptical of mass produced food, we have even better news. The festival has extended its arms to homecooks and home bakers too! Now, there’s truly no reason to not attend, is there?
Indo-Pak Exhibitions Are The Flavour of The Month
India and Pakistan may be sworn enemies on the political front. But culturally, the two countries have belonged to a common lineage and shared heritage since time immemorial. The lifestyle and clothing choices are not very different either. Here are two exhibitions this month that celebrate the indo-pak amalgamation of designs and motifs.
| What : Nikaah Indo-Pak Exhibition
When : Apr 14 – Apr 15, 2018 | 11AM onwards Where: Hyatt Regency, Chandigarh |
What : Jashan Indo-Pak Exhibition
When : Apr 28 – Apr 30, 2018 | 10AM onwards Where: Himachal Bhawan, Sector 28 |
Before partition tore the two nations apart, North India and Pakistan belonged to one common identity, i.e. Punjab. The two countries are similar in culture, history, and heritage simply by virtue of being rooted in the same land, being descendants of the same civilisation. Be it food, music, literature, movies, mysticism, lifestyle – there are no dearth of similarities between the two countries.
What’s more, as neighbours with common tastes, Indian styles and designs are often influenced by Pakistani culture in the same way as theirs are influenced by us. The two countries constantly inspire each other, and yet, it’s a shame that there is such political enmity between the two sibling countries. Nevertheless, if there is anything that the friendly relationship between Indians and Pakistanis proves, it is that political conflict and vested government interests need not get in the way of a cultural marriage between the two countries. And it is exhibitions like these that are exactly the proof of this marriage of cultures.
While Nikaah is an Indo-Pak exhibition that is all about fashion and design, Jashan is more of a lifestyle exhibition. The first one promises you labelled apparel, designer wear, jewellery, fashioned footwear, and accessories. Jashan, on the other hand, will include all of the above designer wear jazz as well as home decor and lifestyle products and services. The aesthetic of Pakistani designers is similar to that of Indian designers in more ways than you may be aware. Here’s your chance to go out there and get the exposure to indo-pak styles that are truly in vogue these days.
