‘Zero Waste’ Weddings at Community Centres to Get 20 Percent Booking Discount
Big fat Indian weddings are a hallmark of Punjab. The kind of waste one wedding generates amounts to loads of plastic waste which further degrades the environment.
Chandigarh MC has come up with a unique way of lessening waste in weddings. Wedding in which there is zero waste will get 20 per cent subsidy/discount for booking the venue at community centres, dharamsalas, open spaces and janj ghars in Chandigarh.

Any event that is held without the use of plastic in any form or any non-biodegradable garbage would fall in the zero waste category.
The 20 per cent of the said discount or subsidy would be passed on to the bank account of the claimant after the scrutiny of the venue by the Municipal Corporation officials.
This will help achieve the objective of taking Chandigarh in the direction of plastic and garbage free city.
Earlier, the MC had supported a zero-waste wedding which took place at Sector 35 in November last. The MC carried out zero waste wedding of Pooja, daughter of Ram Kumar and Mukesh, son of Sarwan Singh, both of whom belong to Sector 42.
The Municipal Corporation is encouraging the initiative to score in the Swachh Survekshan 2023 which says that zero waste weddings, social gatherings or religious functions are to be organized with no use of 200 ml water bottles at the venue.
The parameters that need to be followed:
No plastic or flex to be used for displaying info about the wedding
Details about the event are to be printed on eco-friendly paper material
A board outside the gate to clearly mention Zero-waste Swachh event
Use of natural flowers and not artificial ones
No plastic water bottles, plastic cups to be used
Only bio-degradable cups to be used for beverages
Sanitisers to be used at snack counters
Placement of blue and green bins at appropriate places
Looking for Coconut Water in Mohali? Here’s Where You Will Get It
Mohali residents will now have the luxury of getting coconut water at multiple sites across Mohali. In a first, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has earmarked 43 vending sites for selling coconut water on roadside. Mohali has become the only district in Punjab which has special sites for coconut stalls.
This is where you will get coconut water in Mohali:
Three sites each in Phases 1 and 11,
two sites each have been earmarked in Phases 2, 3B1, 3B2, 6, 9, 10, 7 and Sectors 70, 71 and 78
Four vendors in Sector 68,
One each vendor in Phases 3A, 4, 5, 7, 8, 8B, YPS Chowk, Sectors 66, 67,77,79,80 and at Sohana village.
How will Mohali MC benefit?
The Mohali MC is all set to fetch a revenue of over ₹1 crore yearly from these stalls.
Each vendor will have to pay ₹72,000 advance, including three month rent as security fee ( ₹54,000), besides a month’s rent in advance ( ₹18,000) and GST. The advance security will be adjusted in the last three months of the year-long contract.
A vendor will have to pay ₹600 daily or ₹18,000 a month.
Last year, Mohali MC had allocated 28 coconut water sites and earned ₹26 lakh revenue. The MC has received 500 applications till now from potential vendors for allocation.
Only residents of Punjab or Tricity can apply for the licence. Apart from coconut water, nothing else will be allowed to be sold by the coconut water vendors.
If they are caught selling other things, they would be issued a notice as first warning. On second offence, they will have to pay ₹5,000 fine and in case of repeat violation, their contract will be cancelled and security would not be refunded.
The Mohali MC will not open tenders for the allotment of sites as the scheme is meant for poor people, and open tenders would benefit the contractors only.
MC Commissioner Navjot Kaur has said that draw-of-lots will be conducted soon for transparent allotment to pick 43 vendors.

Himalayan Knights Completes World’s Longest Non-stop Relay Run
Passion flamed with necessity, ignites a fire which makes difficult tasks achievable. One such goal was set by Team Himalayan Knights, a conglomeration of runners, and fulfilled by setting a world record for the longest non-stop relay run in the world. The team will soon feature in the Guinness Book of World Record after all the verifications and formalities are complete.

20 persons, including four girls and one parathlete in the age group of 15-40 participated in this relay which touched each state in India covering 9,490 km in 960 hours in 40 days.
The non-stop relay run which began on November 10 from Raj Bhavan, Haryana, at Chandigarh culminated on December 20, 2022 at the India Gate, New Delhi. It continued non-stop for 40 days with each runner running an average of 11-12 km for an minimum one hour.
There were five runners from Haryana, two from Himachal, two from Uttar Pradesh two from Rajasthan, two from Madhya Pradesh. Some of them are teachers, some are from the Indian Army and some are international mountaineers.

The team members include Sandeep Arya, Lalit Yadav, Vikas, Baljeet Kaur, Priyanka, Narendra, Saurabh, Keshav, Karan, Rakesh, Kuldeep, Kapil, Ravi, Babli, Dipanshu, Rajan, Govind, Sonu, Dinesh, Sunil, Ratnesh, Mehak, Manish, Kunal and Pradeep.

CityWoofer caught up with the deputy team leader, Lalit Yadav.

How do you select athletes who are good enough for a long haul?
Besides their athletic abilities, our primary aim is to watch out for the attitude of the relay runner—how well is he/she able to adjust with a team and his sportsmanship ability. We cannot provide luxury as we have limited resources. We look for people who are flexible with their needs as logistics are scarce, we arrange for food, lodging, everything on our own, so sometimes you might just have to go on without the basic requirements.
Some of our athletes are from poor families, They don’t throw tantrums and are flexible enough to lead their life in any kind of adversity.

What is the most important achievement of the relay run?
Team Himalayan Knights has broken the record of the world’s longest relay race established by European countries. The 6,460 km was the original world record till November 2022 which was the longest. This record was broken this November by a European team who covered 7,767 km in 960 hours with around 1,000 participants. Our team covered this distance in 790 hours with just 20 relay runners.

How did you arrange for the logistics?
We had two traveller buses accompanying the team in which the players slept and rested. They survived on normal dal-roti–sabji, supplements, no special diet, 30 pc logistics we arranged through our own links.
What was the aim of the relay run?
Our aim was not only to create a world record, but also to do something for the society, so we introduced this theme of Run Against Depression. After Covid, many people and their families were struggling with their mental health, so we decided to create awareness through this run. The team went across India meeting school children, college students and people and and created an awareness against depression.
What is your next target?
We aim to do a relay run 15000-16,000 km across the world.

Open Mic Events Catching Up in Tricity
Open mics have become a weekend culture in the Tricity with many events being hosted regularly at various cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Last weekend, on December 18, an open mic event was held at the Social, Sector 7, Chandigarh. The event saw huge participation where a good number of people had registered to perform. Not only that, many people came to support their near and dear ones and also to cheer the other participants.
Open mic events are also held at ths sector 17 underpass where an NGOn Grey shades had held a open mic event in which many senior citizens performed and participated with gusto.

Speaking about the event, Rishabh Parashar, who was one of the organisers, told us that it was one of their best as it saw a lot of audience, which he said, was a rare site.
“The response for this one was particularly great. There were about 17 performers and 35-40 listeners,” Rishabh shared, adding that though there were some old timers, many fresh faces were also to be seen at the event giving their heart and soul and putting themselves out there.
Some of these performers included names such as Amar, Garima, Vishal, Mridul, and Saumya, who, as Rishabh said, “were great on the day as always”.

Social located in Sector 7 is known for hosting interactive and engaging events such as the open mic. For those who haven’t attended open mics, these events provide a democratic and open platform for performers who would like to participate.
The participants can recite poetry, sing, do stand-up comedy, storytelling or any other performative act after registering for the event. About organising the event, Rishabh shared, “The events at Social have always been great and a lot of credit for that goes to the vibe of it.”
He further said, “These open mics that are currently happening at Social are being organised by Jahnvi (from the Social team) and me. It has been a great association with them and we look forward to many more. There are other great mics happening in the city too, like Speaking Souls by Anshu Shardha.”
Sharing about their future plans, Rishabh said that they go for organising one open mic and a curated show each month of the year. Next month, in January, a poetry slam event has been planned, as well as a mix art curated show.
If you interested in attending or participating in any of these events, do keep a lookout at the Instagram page of Social. Also, a similar event was held yesterday which had been organised by Speaking Souls at Mera Qi studios (544, sector 18 B, Chandigarh). You can follow Mera Qi (@circusofmera.qi) or Speaking Souls (_speakingsouls) or @rishabh__parashar on Instagram to be updated about future events.

Christmas to New Year’s Eve Rush: Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is ‘housefull’
Come Christmas and New Year, the best destination closer home that Tricity residents flock to is the Queen of Hills, Shimla. What would be more interesting than meandering your way through the hills on a train. The biggest attraction on the Kalka-Shimla railway track is the toy train. Six toy trains operate and take tourists from Kalka to Shimla and their demand goes up tremendously in the winter.
Though, there is no forecast about snowfall during Christmas these winters or even during New Year’s Eve, the toy train booking is full between December 24 and 27. After December 27, there is a waiting of 100 passengers to get a seat.

Two vista dome train compartments have been built at the Kapurthala Coach Factory KCF especially to be attached to the Shimla-Kalka toy train bogies. A trial for the same has been carried out between November 25 and December 6 which went quite smoothly. By February 2023, these two vista dome compartments (enhances the view, and provide additional comfort to the passengers) will become a regular feature.
Keeping the heavy flow of tourists in mind, two more special trains have been introduced. Though, between December 20 and January 1, only one special train has been made operational. However, if there is increased demand in the latter part of January this service may be extended.
Timings of the train:
3:30 am –- Passenger Toy Train
5:25 am — Rail Motor Car
5:45 am –- Shivalik Deluxe toy train
6:20 am –- Mail Express toy train
7:00 am – Vistadome Himdarshan Express
12:00 noon – Himalayan Queen toy train
1:05 pm – Holiday special train
The Kalka-Shimla train was flagged off for the first time on November 9, 1903 by the British and since then it has always enchanted visitors wanted to capture the scenic beauty of the hills.
INST, Mohali, Develops Oximeter to Determine Jaundice in New-Borns; Lycopene Sensors to Test Tomatoes
Anxious moments would soon be over for newbie parents who get to know that their new-born is suffering from jaundice. Now, infants may not have to undergo a blood test to determine if the new born has jaundice or not.

A jaundice-cum-oxygen saturation will soon be determinable through one instrument – an oximeter which will also determine whether a child has jaundice. At a meeting, organised at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, many researchers from various multi-national companies descended here where it came to light that the technology will soon be patented.

According to INST, one of the Ph. D research scholars of the institute felt the need of introducing an added feature to the existing oximeters, which give the pulse rate and oxygen saturation readings. He wanted the oximeter to be able to determine whether the child has jaundice, and also that the instrument be easily operated at home. This will ensure that no blood sample is taken, and also there is no fear of hospital-acquired infection which is so prevalent among children.
Paper-based lycopene sensor developed at INST, Mohali
Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Mohali, has also come up with an innovation of a slip – a paper-based lycopene sensor that will determine the amount of lycopene in a tomato since lycopene is an anti-cancer agent and is found in enough quantity in tomatoes. Then, the slip can be scanned on your smart mobile phone.

Dr Vijay Shanamygam and his student Kamaljit Kaur, who is doing her post-doctorate in a University in Israel, are instrumental in bringing about this innovation.
There is a huge demand for lycopene in the food and beverages industry and also in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. Lycopene is also available in a supplement form as its an anti-oxidant which lowers the risk of cancer, infertility, heart ailments, metabolic syndrome, etc.
India is the second largest producer of tomatoes and 11 per cent of the tomato production of the world happens here. In India, Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of tomatoes followed by Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, and Madhya Pradesh.
