Recycling of Empty Milk Packets, An Intiative by SGGSC-26
What started an year ago as an experiment has begun to show results. The empty milk packets which we throw away in dustbins everyday can serve a good purpose, this realisation dawned on Dr Navjot Kaur, Principal, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, who started this initative in her own college first. Then it culminated into a mission with 15 other schools and colleges across the Tricity joining in.

We have all heard of recycling of wastes, but beginning this at the preliminary college and school level sends the right signals to budding minds who can be sensitized to preservation of Nature and our surroundings.

“I got to know about this innovative technology through newspapers which three women in Mumbai are using to recycle empty milk packets,” says Dr Navjot Kaur.

Eco Scouts, a student wing of Dharat Suhavi Environment Society in the college, students and the staff of the school started getting empty packets, washed and dried to school for the project, the others followed. Once about 10 kg of empty packets are collected, a scrap collection company, ScrapBuk Services based in Mohali, collects it from the college and couriers it to Mumbai where they are recycled in a plant.
The process
The collected milk packets are cleaned with water and dried. The packets are shred into small pieces, after which small granules of plastic are compressed with machines and reformed into different kinds of plastics that can be reused in making baskets, packets, ropes and many more usable items.
Point to ponder
Never cut the milk packet at the corner with scissors, as normally everybody does, as it becomes very harmful in this form if any animal or human being ingests it by mistake. Always make a slit in the milk packet to empty its contents.
Doomsday Theme For an Event By a Doctor’s Group
Bringing a ritualistic doomsday event like no other to the city, a group of medical professionals along with Tricity-based Mera Qi and performance group Sneaky Peaky Boo under the name ‘Fugue’ are all set to bring out your dark side. Here is all you need to know about the exciting event.
Fugue literally is a medical term used for dissociative amnesia. In simple language, it refers to temporary reversible memory impairment. The person might travel off to places in a fugue state, develop a whole new identity and remember nothing about it when he/she returns to his/her normal life.

Doomsday marks the first of the four rituals that have been planned for 2023. The first ritual includes being part of the theme right from the moment he/she enters the ritual. One would experience the world we expect once the apocalypse strikes the earth.
There are 8 artists partnering for the event, apart from local talent, along with ‘Take Two’ and Aditya Kulharia.

With spectacular visual, vibe and music, Fugue acts like a draining channel of creativity for these doctors who have been together since college. These doctors who like to remain behind the scene handle the creative aspects at Fugue. The themes which they promise to deliver have been diligently curated over the years.
Since the tagline says, ‘We sell vibe!’, it would be a limited capacity ritual of about 500 ritualists.
Sneaky Peaky is a performance troupe with a group of artists coming together and putting together different acts, experimenting with different ideas and working together. It started with Arunesh Moudgil as a movement artist trying to find music for his movement and then he found some musicians along the way and they started performing together. They are always looking for a variety of styles to play and explore with.
Arunesh says, “This event is a new project, a bunch of doctors coming together and wanting to create a theme-based performance dance event. The event is more about what the audience is going to experience as part of the vibe there. For the vibe they have us.”.

Also next to the stage, along with goofy characters running around, there will be four dead brides being part of the party and the concept comes from the Mexican festival of celebrating the dead, he further shares. Arunesh will be doing the fire acts, while Ayesha Sandhu, the curator at Mera Qi in Sector 18, Chandigarh, will be a Shamanic witch from 2053.
There are two specially-created dance spaces with techno music with dark lighting. Ayesha will be doing artwork as well, along with tarot cards and crystals that will be a part of it. There will also be an aerial guitarist inspired by ‘Mad Max’.
Chaotic and messy will be what one can expect. The idea is to participate and interact as it is about poking and triggering people with a little bit of harshness, inviting them to be a part of the play, Arunesh concludes.
When: January 7, 2023
Venue: The Jungle Bar, Chandigarh
Strokes & Verses, Where Art Pervades All Forms
Strokes & Verses is an environmentally conscious startup in Chandigarh which is steeped in eco-friendly crafts, arts, utility products, and wearables, for a greener and sustainable planet. The founder is Balpreet Kaur, who likes to call herself a ‘full-time’ artist and is also a healthcare administrator equipped with an MHA degree. She has worked with Fortis Hospital, Mohali, as a healthcare administrator in their Covid vaccination project in 2020 – 2021.
She been practising art since childhood and till date, she has involved herself in different projects, making art commercial, for common people and corporate companies also.
Earlier, she owned a workshop and an outlet for clothing, called ‘Xpressions’ in Yamunanagar, Haryana. On moving to Chandigarh, she opened an outlet ‘The Wardrobe’, which is more focused on designer clothing. CityWoofer explored more about Balpreet Kaur and her art.

How did you come up with this unique name?
We strive to be good stewards of the planet leaving no carbon footprint and working with utmost thoughtfulness and consciousness. The name ‘Strokes and Verses’ came to me almost instantly when I decided to showcase my art. My life has always revolved around art. As a child, I would often look up to gazing at magazines and admire the art, patterns and architecture printed on their glossy pages.
Have you been into art work since childhood?
I had an introduction to paints and brushes in my childhood. I have lived all my life with colours, brushes, colour strokes, and blank canvases waiting to be painted. As a child, I was a daydreamer. Imagining and visualising things added fuel to the fire in me. I spent my free time (in fact, still do) as a keen observer — sitting near the window of my first-floor house which was situated near the market. Everything inspired me- people, traffic jams, festivals, anything.
With the passage of time, I also developed a nomadic mindset which helped me to create art more freely. Whenever I travel across different cultures, landscapes, languages, and wildlife, I find myself becoming more flexible to create what I perceive.
What was the moment that enlightened you?
One day, while flipping through a magazine from the USSR (before disintegration), vibrant red flowers caught my eye. I was looking at a beautiful poster, its cool grey background made the flowers pop, and I instantly knew that parting with this surge of vibrant energy wasn’t an option.
I reproduced those flowers in a painting and in the process added a bit of my personal touch to translate all the emotions. I got that painting framed, and for years it served as a reminder that art is my permanent refuge.
The real push to make Strokes and Verses a reality came when I successfully reproduced ‘The Last Supper’ by ‘Leonardo da Vinci’. The journey of reproducing this complex and breathtaking piece of art was not an easy one. I spent weeks with my canvas and oil paints, often painting till 3 am.

What art forms do you practise?
As we create hand-painted customized, decorative, utility-based and wearable art, so we practise fine arts, visual arts, and decorative art, which requires painting, which can be oil/ acrylic/fabric/ watercolour/ mixed media.
What is the vision for your brand?
We customise the strokes of our brushes to fit our client’s vision. We wish to provide aptly crafted and designed products for a green planet, with utmost care for the environment around us.
What is the price range of your products?
My products are available both in premium and affordable ranges. The price of the product depends on the work on an art piece. We carefully create an art piece which people can afford too.
You also give art classes. Can you tell us a bit about what you teach and the charges?
I have an art studio in the premises of my house, where we create art and take drawing and painting classes also. We take both group and individual classes depending upon the interest of the student. Our basic charges for learning drawing and painting are ₹ 5000/- for 10 classes. Mostly our charges depend on the kind of art a student wants to learn. We are going to introduce some new art forms also like the art of upcycling, which uses the technique of Decoupage.
What are your future plans?
In future, I hope to collaborate with talented artists and creators around the globe. My upcoming series is in collaboration with a home decor brand called, ‘The Moss’. The series is intensely spiritual and each piece is a depiction of the awakened form of one of the ‘seven chakras’ in our body.
I am currently working with co-authors on a collection of short fictional stories inspired by incidents and events from my life.
In the future we are going to launch our brand on Amazon. We are planning to expand our business by making available our products in countries like Australia in a collaboration with local art lovers.

PGI to Get 150-Bed Critical Care Block Soon
The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research ( PGIMER), Chandigarh, will now have more space to attend to patients in critical condition. The PGI administration has got an in-principal nod for the construction of a critical care block at the PGI hospital premises.
The PGI will get a 150-bed facility soon, for which the Centre has sanctioned Rs 208 crore. This project will come up under the aegis of the Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission PM-ABHIM.
The union government has already approved Rs 100 crore for this project. The remaining portion – of about Rs 88 crore — will be spent by PGI.
The scheme comes as part of the special programme to set up critical care units in 12 central hospitals under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. After the second wave of COVID, critical care became a point of concern across the nation and there was a heavy shortage of ICU beds.
The critical care will have an emergency area and the Intensive Care Unit, Isolation Wards, Operating Theatres, and labour and recovery rooms and a neo-natal care unit.
The block will also have medical gas supply lines right to the bed, oxygen manufacturing plants, oxygen supply, air handling units and mechanisms for infection prevention and control.
Apart from the ICU beds, the critical care block will also have general wards which will come up near the cardiac care institute. The construction will begin in 2023 itself.
During the second COVID wave, the PGI had a dedicated 250-bed arrangement for critically suffering COVID patients. Apart from this, the entire Nehru block was also available for COVID patients.
