Mornings at Sukhna Lake? Breathtaking View of Sunrise Will Etch Itself in Your Mind
In the madding din of the bustling city, we tend to look for places where we can destress ourselves, especially when hard-pressed to make it to a nearby hill station.
The all-pervading serenity and solitude of the spectacular Sukhna Lake comes to mind and intensifies the hidden wanderlust which eggs you on to waste no time and zoom off. And, if it happens to be Sunday, it’s a double delight as there are no official wrangles to hound you for a while. Folks, you need to be a tad choosy with the timing. Morning is the right time to visit this enigmatic lake and listen to the strains of divine music created by the soul-soothing ripples of the staid lake waters.

Known as the jewel of the City Beautiful, Sukhna Lake, the magnificent rain-fed water body, is barely two km from another wonderland – the iconic Rock Garden – which abounds in natural beauty and bounty to be savoured for hours should you have a whale of a time.
What adds to the beauty of this unique Lake is that it enjoys a captivating view, silhouetted against the Shivalik ranges making a perfect backdrop. What is so fascinating about this first-of-its-kind of lake is that those visiting never forget to view the glorious sunrise on a cloudless day, be it any season of the year.
“Whenever we come over to Chandigarh, Sukhna Lake is the one-stop favourite haunt among other places of interest dotting the City that we never forget to visit. What makes it all the more exciting is the glorious sunrise that we never miss watching here on our visit to this place offering a Midas’ Touch”, say Dr Pradip and Mamta, owners of Rahul clinic at Jeori in Shimla.
Created in 1958, the lake measures three sq km and is skirted by a thick green cover lending luminosity to the sylvan surrounds, which make it one of the most googled and one of the most happening places in the city. The walkway along the lake, the joggers’ track and the walkers’ kutcha track are lined up with grooves of ornamental and medicinal tree, including the royal palm, kachnar, amaltas, sitafal, satpatia, gulachin, putranjiva and peepal and mango trees. The cynosure of all eyes is the heritage 150-year-old peepal tree in the centre of the track.

As you walk past the historic tree, you are enthused to listen to the feathered friends singing sweet nothings perched precariously on the treetops. These avian neighbours are sure to make your trip musical.

The health freaks have a wonderful time doing some kinds of workouts or doing yogic ‘asanas’ and other aerobic exercises at a space earmarked for the purpose. They sweat it out unmindful of the space or time constraints, being a Sunday.
For those who wish to be in communion with the divine for a while, away from the jostling crowd of the lake promenade comprising people from all walks of life, there is a well carved-out Garden of Silence, offering a celestial spot to rewind and be yourself for a while, away from the honking horns and the cacophony of the door bells. An imposing statue of Lord Buddha in spotless white at the dead centre of the garden amidst concentric circular stairs made of flagstone, look spectacular and the Bougainvillea flower adding to the beauty of this place paradisiacal peace.
During the day
As you briskly enter the lake site through the well-maintained mini flower gardens, you see a beeline at the boating ticket counter. There are all kinds of small and big boats available for those interested in boating. While couples chose to go cruising in two-seater or four-seater pedal boats, others with families and friends opt for the jumbo-sized shikara. Wearing life jackets is mandatory for all though.
While food lovers have options to tickle their taste buds at food joints and eateries here offering them hot, tasty and tangy treats, the teeny-weeny guests visiting the spot, spend quality time at the amusement park, playing adventure games, enjoying a jaunty train and a camel ride, while they gorge on ice cream, ice candy and other goodies all the while.
Winged visitors’ winter sojourn
Thousands of winged guests from home and the faraway lands come calling when chill starts picking up and become harsh there, and make Sukhna Lake as their winter sojourn. They land in Chandigarh every year by mid-November from Siberia, Central Asia, China, Afghanistan and the upper Himalayas and their stay lasts till March or April.
Rose Festival: Sign Language Textbooks For Speech And Hearing Impaired Win Hearts
All roads in Chandigarh and its neighbouring satellite townships, Panchkula, Zirakpur and Mohali, led to the historic Zakir Rose Garden, Sector 16, Chandigarh, with visitors in droves flocking to be a part of the annual Rose Festival. The 3-day mega event on day two, being a holiday on account of Shivratri, witnessed an unprecedented rush, apparently due to certain add-ons this season like the light and sound show introduced for the first time.

Though the mega event was marked by stellar flower decorations of exotic varieties of roses and other fascinating floral showcase, food court, camel rides, display of weaponry, among others, the cynosure of all eyes was the Deaf Hunar Textbooks stall from the state of Haryana, which won hearts of visitors for more reasons than one.
In an informal chat with CityWoofer, Pallavi representing Haryana Welfare Society for Persons with Speech and Hearing Impairment (HWSPSHI), headquartered at Panchkula, says, “The announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make teaching of Indian Sign Language as a language subject synchronising with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, has given a reason to rejoice for the vast majority of those battling hearing impairment in the country. The initiative has come as a big boost to spread awareness about the Indian Sign Language (ISL) in the country”.

Shedding more light on these books, Pallavi says these books are unique with the ISBN numbers, QR codes with signed version for reference, adding that these textbooks are copyright protected, printed copies of which are available with HWSPSHI.
She further adds that the books have been conceptualised and created by an expert textbook development team of certified ISL teachers of repute and subject experts with years of experience to credit. She is quick to add that the graphics for these textbooks had been designed by ace designer Himanshu Kansal, who is deaf by birth.
“We hope these ISL textbooks can be of hands-on use making the initiative a dream-come-true for the deaf community comprising more than 50 lakh people across the country,” she says enthusiastically.
She is hopeful that ISL would prove to be a boon for teaching as a language subject in all schools for the deaf in the country. “The flagship initiative would not only enhance and open up employment avenues for ISL teachers in schools and colleges, but would also help empower the deaf teachers, thus contributing to the inclusive growth of the country”, she signs off with a beam of optimism writ large on her face.
More about HWSPSHI

Sharing details of the founding of the society, Jyoti, another senior member of the faculty, says the Haryana Welfare Society for Persons with Speech and Hearing Impairment (HWSPSHI), was established in 1971 and is one of the oldest organization in the country working tirelessly for the early intervention, education, accessibility, RCI approved teacher training (D.Ed. HI & DTISL), skill training, counselling, digital sign language lab (SIGN LIBRARY), ISL club and creating ISL books for children with hearing impairment and facilitating their holistic growth.
HWSPSHI has developed Indian Sign Language (ISL) books from foundation level to Class VIII. The Haryana Governor is the president of the Society and the chief minister is its vice-president.
The Society has eight centres across the state, one each at Gurugram, Hisar, Sirsa, Karnal, Sonepat, Nagina (Mewat), Raipur Rani and Panchkula, working in tandem with district administration, state government, CSR partners and local community towards making education accessible to the deaf students across the farthest corners of Haryana.
Dr Taranjit Kaur, who is the driving force behind this great humanitarian effort, is the vice-president and chairperson of the Society, with the Deputy Commissioner as ex-officio Chairman of the centre.
An ecstatic Dr Taranjit Kaur says with oodles of optimism, “The organization and, of course, our tireless staff, students and CSR partners together have won as many as 24 coveted state awards in the past four years, besides three national awards for empowerment for persons with disabilities including the ‘Best Employer’ award for the year 2020”.

Girls’ Gang Hangs Out: Sacred Heart Dalhousie Alumnae Meet Spreads Warm Smiles in Chandigarh

When old timers meet after a long time with a few more grey strands of hair and wrinkles of wisdom and experience, they reminisce their youthful days. Nostalgia rents the air, not letting go off any moment, with warm hugs, tight handshakes and overjoyed eyes. This is what the atmosphere was at the alumnae meet of the Chandigarh Chapter of Sacred Heart Dalhousie which held its 2nd reunion after a prolonged gap of 4 years.

Sacred Heart girls from the UK, Indonesia, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Delhi made the day one to remember. All this was possible with the joint efforts of all the team members, under the guidance of the Chandigarh Chapter President, Sarabjit Kaur, lovingly called Saby.

Sacred Heart Dalhousie, established in 1901, still stands tall as an institution and all the alumnae take pride in being a part of it. Whenever and wherever the girls meet, the conversation centers around the school, college, and the great ethical values that each one of them imbibed in some form or the other, all of which are deeply ingrained in their attitudes and lifestyles.
It is with this sentiment and excitement that all the lovely ladies had eagerly awaited the reunion. Those who left college 50 years ago, took this Reunion as an opportunity to come together and relive and revive their golden memories.

Behind the fun-filled nostalgia lay the strong bond of togetherness which transcended all barriers of age. ‘Girls’ in their mid 70s, very comfortably and with ease, found a common ground with those in their late 40s.

The CGA (Chandigarh Golf Association) Club, Chandigarh, vibrated with the songs of yore, and the impromptu dance brought back the giggles, the laughter, and the nostalgia which made everyone feel adoration and immense gratitude for the Sacred Heart nuns and teachers who moulded them.
