Family Life Wavered

Meanwhile, Yo Yo Honey Singh’s personal life was going through a rough patch as he went through divorce from his wife Shalini Talwar. The rapper paid an alimony of ₹1 crore. In 2021, Shalini had registered a case of domestic violence against him  after a marriage of 21 years.

However, he gave many hit numbers in 2022 with his songs in Brahmastra 1 and Bhul bhulaiyan 2,  and his  own songs — Together Forever, Casanova, Paris ka trip and Honey 3.0.

Maha Vir Chakra and Vashisht Seva Medal  winner Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri led  120 soldiers in the Battle of Longewala, while facing a strong 2,500-3,000 assault force of the Pakistani 51st Infantry Brigade. The odds were India would have lost the battle. But Chandpuri and his Batallion held the Pakistanis at bay for a full night until the arrival of the Indian Air Force fighter planes in the morning who destroyed the enemy’s tanks one by one.

Back home, his wife Surinder Kaur Chandpuri had no inkling that war had broken out and neither did she know where was her husband posted. She was travelling with her mother-in-law to Chandigarh when she got to know about the war. She knew he was somewhere in the western sector, but where? When she came to know about the war, she went silent, kept crying, as told by her later reliving the war memories.

She did not know then, it was a historical win with her husband at the forefront of a war that would be remembered for generations to come. We’ve completed 50 yrs of the battle of Longewala and the fourth death anniversary of the hero of the historic battle falls on Nov 17.

Late Brig Kuldip Singh Chandpuri

He was decorated with India’s second highest gallantry award Mahavir Chakra and  Vashisht Seva Medal. Such was his strength of character and devotion to the armed forces that he carried a loaded carbine with him to shoot himself if he was captured by the Pakistani troops during the battle of Longewala.

The Battle of Longewala

Fought on 4-5 December  1975, 120 men of 23rd battalion of Punjab regiment led by Major Chandpuri saved a strategically important post backed by 22nd Armoured regiment fighting over 2,000 strong force of the Pakistani army backed by over 40 tanks.

Moving from bunker to bunker, Chandpuri kept inspiring his men encouraging them to beat back the enemy until reinforcements arrived. Kuldip Singh Chandpuri and his men inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, and forced them to retreat, leaving behind twelve tanks.

Among a few things that Chandpuri used to his advantage was the anti-tank mines laid by the Pioneer.  One of the only defence against the powerful enemy was the wire fence that had been basically laid to keep out the wild camels that came sniffing for water.

Having patrolled the areas around and fortified the trenches, the batallion was confident . Intelligence inputs had already pointed to a Pakistani attack, and air strikes on all Indian airfields started on Dec 3 announcing the start of the war on the western front.

On the night of December 4/5, Lt Dharamvir, the Company Officer with Maj Chandpuri, reported large columns of tanks and infantry moving towards Longewala. Maj Chandpuri collected his men, spoke to them about their rich martial traditions and urged them to hold fast at all costs. He, however, said that anyone who feared death was free to leave, but he would fight to the very last. “Loon de mull chakaon da wela aa gaya sathiyo (time has come to repay a national debt),” he had said.

MVC CITATION

As the enemy inched closer,  Chandpuri had no answer from his CO on his request for reinforcements and tanks. The enemy tanks had closed in on the wire and gradually spread out to surround the post. Exchange of small arms fire had commenced, all avenues of reinforcement were now blocked. Maj Chandpuri expected a tank assault on his weak defence anytime. Fortunately, that did not happen. The Pakistani tanks thought the fence to ward off camels to be a minefield, so they stopped, in order to save their tanks.

Maj Chandpuri was now moving under continuous artillery from the enemy. Tank-tracer rounds were guiding every fire and making it more accurate, men were getting injured but seeing their Company Commander move under fire kept the company motivated.

As day broke, the IAF Hunter aircraft took to air strikes targeting every tank in the open, once Maj Chandpuri communicated to the higher-ups that all the tanks that IAF planes were seeing from above were Pakistani tanks.

How did he make it possible?

“I was given a task in writing and I had to complete it until changes were received from the army in writing. I did what was asked to do by my seniors,” he had told the then Field Marshall R M Carver who later went to visit the site which saw such heroism.

Making of the film ‘Border’

Filmmaker JP Dutta’s brother, Squadron Leader Deepak Dutta, was one of the officers who had come as saviours on the dusk of Dec 5 to bombard the Pakistani tankers and relieve the unit of the fight overnight.

JP Dutta was a collegiate when his brother narrated the entire sequence and the chivalry of the infantry unit at his Mumbai home to his family after the war. JP Dutta had then decided he would make a film on this win one day. However, he had to wait for 25 long years to make it because the Official Secrets Act forbids sharing of details of war for 25 years.

Citywoofer.com spoke to late Brig Chandpuri’s son Hardeep Chandpuri who lives in Chandigarh.

Tell us about Brig Chandpuri as a person, a father, an officer?

He was very cool-headed, always helpful, and he went out of the way to help others, especially the JCOs and other ranks.

As a father, he was not strict, but firm. I never remember him shouting at us. I have fond memories of him, we still feel his presence amongst us.

How old were you when the Battle of Longewal was fought?

I was one-yr-old and my two other siblings were born later.

A film was made on this historic battle with Brig Chandpuri as the protagonist, what were his initial reactions?

He always gave credit for the victory to the people who fought with him.

How do you feel being a gallantry award winner’s son?

Our family is the only family in Indian military history to have produced four gallantry award winners – Maha Vir Chakra for my father, my two uncles in the Indian Air Force who received Vir Chakras and another Vir Chakra posthumously for a close relative.

Nobody is unaware of the Dharavi slum in Mumbai which is one of the world’s largest slums. It is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Founded in 1884 during the British colonial era, it has an informal economy of its own in which numerous household enterprises employ many slum residents in leather, textiles and pottery products which are made in Dharavi.

The total current population of Dharavi slum is unknown because of the floating population of migrant workers. The voter turnout of 2019 state legislative assembly election was 119,092, which is only an indication of its population.

Dharavi residents would lap this web series with none other than Suniel Shetty playing the untouchable 63-yr old villain Thalaivan who is in charge of a 30,000-crore empire . Vivek Anand Oberoi plays JCP Jayant Gavaskar, who is on a mission to neutralise Thalaivan and his enemies at all costs.

Speaking about essaying Thalaivan, Suniel Shetty said, “He is powerful, ruthless and is also the most giving to those he considers his family, the people of Dharavi. Through the making of the show, I realized how OTT allows you to really deep dive into your character and Thalaivan made for the perfect digital debut for me.”

Art has always played an important role in connecting people with the emotions and thoughts of artists. Winter increases our laziness quotient. The cold may restrict us indoors, but we need to find reasons to be up and about either inside the house or outdoors. Why is it neccessary to work out in the winters? Listen in to Ishaan, fitness manager of Octane Fitness:

“In some ways, winter can offer benefits you don’t get in summer, for instance, cold weather may actually improve endurance,” says Dominic Jude, fitness trainer at Bodyzone. In colder temperatures your heart doesn’t have to work as hard, you sweat less, and expend less energy, all of which means you can exercise more efficiently.

“On the other hand one has to be super cautious while working out during winter because muscles are at a greater risk of strains and injuries due to the cold, so make sure to warm up before your cold-weather workout,” warns Dr Nimrita Kaur, a dentist and a fitness enthusiast.

The dry cold icy air might be a shock to your system at first, but the best way to warm yourself up is to get going, exercise gets your blood pumping, and you’ll keep that heat long after you finish your workout sessions.

“Exercise can help you avoid the winter blues. So I believe it is very important to work out, especially in winter. Along with exercising, I increase my water intake,” says Deepak, a student.

Mankirat Kaur, nutritionist and fitness coach, recommends a one-hour rule doing some physical activity or the other — yoga, exercise, walking, jogging, Zumba anything to keep yourself up and about. Yes, seasonal changes affect everybody’s psyche, so any form of physical activity will definitely boost your mood. Listen in :

“For me, exercise is always important be it winter or summer. Exercising outdoors provides all the physical benefits that we get from indoor exercise — cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and endurance. It is always important to work out,” says Divya, a banker.

“I have started to catch up with my routine of 2 km morning walk, few breathing exercises like naadi shodan pranayama , and plenty of detox water which I prepare myself at home with herbs or condiments usually found in every home, like, ajwain, tulsi leaves, etc,” says Archana  Sharma.

Daily winter schedule shared by a housewife, Abhilasha

As we go more towards being techno-savvy, going organic is another tangent in that direction. A one-of-its-kind event aimed at promoting organic products was held at Tej Farm in Chandigarh’s first experiential eco showcase.

A family property since 1985, the owner of Tej Farm, Dr Amandeep Kahlon, and her entire family has invested in Nature-based endeavours. Her son Yashvir Singh Sandhu runs Countrysiders Agritech which is a foremost provider of protein-rich Kadaknath eggs from the farm.

After the lockdown , her daughter, Anahat Preet Sandhu started her non profit  venture in 2021 called Unifawe Foundation and Eco Commune is a part of that initiative.“We started working together with like-minded people and met in natural surroundings, rather than getting together in cafes and hotels or restaurants. Why not gather amidst Nature? So that’s where Eco Commune came about,” shares Dr Amandeep.

“It was a synergy waiting to happen. We had some space which has been in the family for some time, we are all fond of doing something which is Nature-based, and got allied with people who are also running businesses or non-profits in the same spirit,” she says,  while talking about Eco commune.

Eco Commune Sundays

A host of exciting workshops which aim at fostering an environment-friendly attitude towards daily living are held at Eco commune, not every Sunday, but only on Sundays whenever they happen.  Mohit Gusain was the singer at the workshop creating a very lively atmosphere to the special Sunday.

Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) set up in Chandigarh as part of the smart city project has been operational since March, 2022. Its primary objective is to enhance the safety and security, improve efficiency of municipal services and promote a better quality of life for residents.

To achieve this goal, a robust ICT Information and Communication Technology infrastructure has been developed that supports digital applications and ensures seamless operations, city management, surveillance, emergency response mechanisms and real-time tracking of services and vital city metrics throughout the city and in government departments. It works in liaison with the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and other stakeholders such as transport, water, fire, police, etc., and  the Chandigarh Police.

“We take the help of CCTV cameras for challaning purposes, for surveillance of public services like which street lights are not functionong, from which house was garbage not collected, where are public cycles being used, which CTU buse routes earns the most revenue, etc.” says Ashish Sharma, Information and Communication Technology Expert at the ICCC, Chandigarh.

“Every month, at least 72-80 cases of snatching, eve teasing, etc are solved till the last stage. But for this, a common man has to approach the police first with its grievance, then only can the police reach out to us for help,” he informs.

ICCC is also majorly into data collection and data analytics which the policy makers can use for the benefit of the government or common man. “It requires years of data collection to reach some conclusion , but it has become easy to collect data and analyse it with the help of ICCC,” says an ICCC official.

What are the challenges ICCC is facing?

Execution part is a little challenging because all departments have to help with inputs, co-ordinate with each other, manual as well as digital information has to be collated. There are technical glitches, language is a major barrier, data needs to be cleaned up to reach a conclusion, he says.

ICCC is functioning in 100 smart cities and towns across India, which is no small achievement.

Jalandhar to have an ICCC  soon

Abhijeet Kaplish IAS, Chief Executive Officer, Jalandhar Smart City Limited along with his team visited Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) of Chandigarh Smart City Limited, located in Sector 17, Chandigarh.  Jalandhar Smart City Limited is also establishing the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).

“Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) is striving to provide efficient service deliveries, a safe and secure environment and better quality of life to the citizens. It acts as a “nerve center” for operations management. It processes a complex and large pool of data sets at an aggregated level. ICCC is designed to enable city administrators to monitor the status of various amenities, any kind of disaster by providing them the real time incident details and help in rapid resolution of the situation,’said Anindita Mitra, Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh Smart City Limited.

ICCC, Chandigarh

Set up at a cost of ₹199 crore to comprehensively monitor the city, the ICCC oversees management of traffic, and major citizen services, including e-governance, sewerage, waste, electricity and public bike sharing, among others.

The most significant highlight of the centre is real-time surveillance of major junctions and important landmarks, such as water works, parks, government hospitals, community centres, parking locations and schools.

For this purpose, more than 1,000 cameras have been installed around the city, including all entry and exit points to maintain a record of all vehicles entering and leaving the city.

Through the ICCC, traffic police officials can remotely also issue e-challans in case of traffic violations.

What is ICCC?

Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) is a command and control centre, even referred to as ‘situation room’. It is the place where the overall operations like monitoring, controlling and commanding are carried out. The CCCs (command and control centre) serves its purpose not only to the government but also to the Departments of Police & Fire, Universities and utility companies and much more. It further helps in sharing of decisive commands, warnings, and alerts quite flawlessly in huge numbers.

How does ICCC help?

It is an important source of intelligence input for management of day to day operations in a city/ town, management of disasters and handling of exceptions on daily basis. Data of complex nature is processed at a comprehensive level. Thus, it provides intelligence for formulating policies and better planning. Information and data are collected through various sensors and applications which are positioned across a certain location. After the analysis of information or data, some suitable and workable details are put forward to act upon.
